Of course all dogs will bark from time to time and this is normal behaviour. But when your dog does too frequently and to the annoyance of not just you but also your neighbours then something needs to be done – we need to know how to stop a dog barking.
Why Is Your Dog Barking Excessively?
There are many reasons why your dog is barking often.
Most dogs bark when a stranger walks up to the house. Dogs have been bred for thousands of years to protect man and this is often an instinctive behaviour though sometimes it can be trained behaviour. If your dog barks excessively when introduced to new people then so long as he knows that you are master then he should quickly listen when told to stop.
Dogs are also always vying for attention and in comparison to other pets (e.g. cats) they regularly demand it from their owners and others. Your dog may have learned from you or someone else that if they bark then you will always come to them.
In fact, this is the most common reason why a dog will bark. They may be feeling bored and they know that if they bark then you will come running and perhaps praise them and spoil them too.
How To Stop A Dog Barking
Ultimately, raising a dog is not too different from raising a child. If you adopt a laissez-faire attitude and spoil the dog and don’t take your own responsibilities seriously then you can expect a disaster.
Remember that a dog does not understand human language. You must be straight-forward. When your dog barks, you should never give it praise. Turn your back and walk into another room. Praise your dog only when you have told him to be quiet and he has successfully done so for a few seconds.
Above all, always be consistent. Your dog cannot read your mind and nor can he understand your English. He can only understand your body language, become familiar with commands and the tone of your voice and he will quickly associate your praise or distaste with whatever action he has just performed.
With dogs, never give in to the easy option and always let your dog know who is the real boss then not only will your dog stop barking but you will also enjoy more success in other aspects of dog obedience.
