Discover The Secrets To Training Your Dog

Dog Obedience Training

Most of the time there is a wide selection of dogs to choose from. Where do you start then? How to choose a dog that will be perfect for you and your family?

Look For Good Health

Regardless of whatever breed you go for you should always choose a healthy dog. It is a sad state of affairs but there are many unhealthy dogs that are bred, perhaps more than there are healthy ones.

Pups should be full of vitality and life. A healthy dog usually has a wet nose and bright eyes. If you see a dog on its own among others then don’t be tempted to feel sorry for it – chances are that it may have developmental or other health problems and you will be the one who has to put up with them for the rest of their life.

Size

One of the easiest ways to start your selection process, even before picking a breed, is to narrow down the size of dog you want.

This will depend on many factors such as how much space you have at home, whether you have a yard or not and even your budget for pet food.

For example, a small apartment is no place to live for a large breed like the German Shepherd. On the other hand, it is probably ideal for a dog such as the Belgian Griffon (the same breed seen in the Jack Nicholson movie, “As Good As It Gets”).

Breed

Man has created hundreds of different dog breeds for very precise purposes over the years. As a result, every breed has a slightly different temperament.

You would do very well to speak to do some further research on some breeds you may already have in mind and others. For example, some dogs are great with children whereas other breeds may prefer a solitary adult companion.

Also, different breeds have different needs. Some may need regular grooming whereas others may not. Be sure to investigate the most common problems for a given breed too – pedigree dogs commonly have problems that are unique to that breed. For example, did you know that many Dalmations have hearing problems and also commonly get kidney and bladder stones?

Age

Many people prefer to buy only puppies, especially families with children. However, you should consider older dogs, especially those who are being re-homed.
The saying “you cannot teach an old dog new tricks” is incorrect. Whilst it is harder to train an older dog it is by no means impossible or even difficult. The training process is for the most part very similar, regardless of how old the dog is.
